Tree Trimming & Pruning
Deadwood out, weight off the long limbs, clearance over the roof. Done right it makes the tree stronger, not just smaller.

When it's genuinely done. I'd rather talk you out of this one if the tree can be saved.

Why the rules keep changing on you
Your town's tree ordinance is not your neighbor's town's tree ordinance
This trips people up constantly. In Austin, anything under 19 inches across on residential property isn't regulated at all — and at 24 inches, an oak becomes a Heritage tree you're basically not allowed to remove. In Buda, taking down a Heritage tree means a City Council public hearing. In Kyle, a 25-inch specimen tree gets replaced two-to-one if it comes out.

If you own an oak, read this before you cut anything
Texas A&M Forest Service says don't prune oaks between February 1 and June 30. Sap beetles carrying oak wilt spores are active then, and a fresh cut is exactly how a new infection center starts. That's five months a year when the honest answer is “wait until fall.”
There's an exception for a genuine safety hazard — fewest cuts possible, paint every wound immediately. Here's the whole thing, including how to tell if you already have it.

A pawn shop chainsaw, an ice storm, and eighteen years
In 2008 an ice storm flattened everything from Oklahoma to Tennessee, and the Fayetteville, Arkansas region I lived in got declared a national disaster area. I bought a chainsaw out of a pawn shop and started clearing my neighbors' homes and streets.
I worked for other outfits for six years after that, then started Ozark of Austin in 2014. There's an ISA Certified Arborist on my crew, and I'm still the one in the tree.
